Heneger’s Chapel Cemetery
Heneger’s Chapel existed before the War Between the States along with the Cemetery beside the Church. According to some locals, this Church and Cemetery is said to have been here since the late 1700’s to early 1800’s and was run by Missionaries to the Cherokees but as of to date, I have not found any documentation to substantiate this. During the War Between the States, Heneger’s Chapel (spelling from research) was burned, destroying the building and most of the Church Records. A few years after the Civil War, the Church building was rebuilt and renamed as Chapel Hill Church and Cemetery. The oldest marked grave I found was Allin Kirklin, 1852.
Chapel Hill Cemetery is located at the base of Signal Mountain on East Valley Rd. . From the first traffic light in Dunlap travel South .07 miles to the second traffic light, stay on 127 South (left to Chattanooga), go 3.0 miles and make a right onto 283 or East Valley Rd.. Chapel Hill Cemetery and Church will be on the right, .03 miles.
I have done my best to record the names and dates of the individuals that are buried in this cemetery as they appeared on their markers but mistakes can be made. Some of the markers are broken, writing barely legible, some with names only or the dates are under ground. Additional broken stones/markers are in a pile at the back of the Cemetery, I do not know their grave location but have added them into this list.
