The land for Kell Cemetery or Thans Chapel Cemetery was given by Robert Kell in the early 1830’s including the land for the Old Bethlehem log church which was torn down about 1935.

Around 1900 Thans Chapel was built, naming it after Nathaniel Deakins. Even though the church was called Thans Chapel the Cemetery remained Kell Cemetery until the late 1940’s to early 1950’s. Today it is known only as Thans Chapel Cemetery.

There are about 48 unknown gravesites.

Thans Chapel or Kell Cemetery is located about 5-1/2 miles South East of Dunlap. From the first traffic light in Dunlap travel South .07 miles to the second traffic light, turn to the left onto Highway 127 toward Chattanooga, travel 1.9 miles and take a right onto John Burch road, go .03 miles and turn left at Hollow road, travel 0.9 and make a right, you will see Thans Chapel or Kell Cemetery straight ahead a little to the left.

I have done my best to record the names and dates of the individuals that are buried in this cemetery as they appeared on their markers but mistakes can be made. I have also left out the dates of the individuals that appear to be still living, out of respect for these people and families. Some of the markers are broken, writing barely legible, and some with names only. If you have a date or a name of a person that can be added to these graves or cemetery, please Contact Me

Rebecca Farmer KELL

Robert KELL

Sometime between May 9, 2006 and February 8, 2007, newer markers have replaced these smaller ones, including dates. ~ G. S.

The Farmer family of Sequatchie County

Contributed by: Amy Grayson Adams ansearchingirl@bellsouth.net.

The Farmer family of Sequatchie County has long been researched, and misunderstood. Recent research and discovery have uncovered new information about the family. It has long been thought that Ruth Farmer (who married William Barker) was a daughter of Andrew Farmer. It has also been said, and is in fact inscribed on her tombstone, that Rebecca Farmer Kell b. 1802 and buried at Thans Chapel Cemetery, was a Barker before marriage to Robert Kell.
